View Full Version : Jibing
How come i bounce so much into a turn when the wind is strong? I've got a RRD Twin Tip 95 liter and a 5.8 charge. It turns great when i am in medium wind. Is it a trick that i have not learned yet?

Hi kyle,
What do you do to initiate a gybe? Do you try to maintain your power throughout the turn? Do you switch your feet, then the sail? Or, the other way around? With wider boards if you step too far forward while gybing lit up, you can actually slow the board down, and the sail will not balance its pull with the board's ability to keep the right speed and add to the bounce. Is that part of what's going wrong? I think someone would have to see what you are doing to really help. Maybe this is a start. Keep trying.

Hi Kyle,
The bounce you're trying to avoid can be caused by a few problems with your entry or transition. The first problem that comes to mind is one that my students have regardless if it's their first planning jibe lesson ever or if they are a regular client that is working on a duck, monkey, donkey, or other type of jibe.
As the wind gets stronger and/or people get fatigued, the body wants to stay low but begins to bend more at the waist instead of the knees. This "butt out stance" keeps some weight on our front foot, causing the board to bounce a little or sometimes a lot.
One key to a clean, smooth entry is to make sure your hips come in over the board before your head or upper body. Think of doing a bit of a limbo under the booms as you start your entry. Your front foot shouldn't have any weight on it. There should be a pulling sensation against the footstrap as it keeps you from falling into the water. We should be leaning that far forward and to the inside of the turn!! If this isn't the problem then I need a little more info.

Thanks Jason. I had two problems. Old technique of stepping forward and not bending my knees enough. Thanks
