Get ready for some great racing and camaraderie!
The Island Style Classic, February 28 and 29 at the Sarasota Sailing
Squadron.
This is one week before the Calema MidWinter Race.
Please pass the word around. The registration form will be posted soon.
Looks like we have some great people for the race committee who will work
hard to give us great courses. I am probably going to work with them so we
have someone on board that knows most of the racers.
Do get your sail numbers in good order. We will have good numbers for sale
at the site if you need them. They need to be at least 10" high, both sides
of sail with the Starboard side higher. Good sail numbers are going to help
avoid a lot of the scoring difficulties that several recent regattas have
experienced. We are also going to avoid handwritten entry forms. I may
need some help making the database web accessible. Any volunteer mentors
out there?
Thanks,
Jack (Sarasota)

I am looking forward to it Jack. Last years was a lot of fun but too much wind for me on Saturday (30+). I am sure that ones again, some of the big names will use it as a training camp for Midwinters.

This was an awesome race last year. Lots of wind and a great sailing site. Not so sure about the sail numbers on both sides. I have not been to race in 10 years that required that.

I had a great time at the event last year and look forward to doing it again. The courses were nice and BIG for the A fleet going around twice. And people I talked to in the Sport fleet felt like they got some great racing in going around once. With plenty of wind to go around for everyone. Lots of people had fun free sailing the afternoon away on 5.0 to 4.5s
Who could forget a long distance race the size of Texas? It reminded me of when my dad and I would spend afternoons island hopping (cruising) across different waterways on longboards 15 years ago. And Hey Steve, don't forget all the great food in the mornings and afternoons.
Jack I have a few questions. How do we preregister without late fees? My parents in FL haven't gotten a registration form in the mail yet. How much will registration be? Can you recommend a budget minded hotel for those of us flying in for the event? The hotel I stayed in last year wasn't worth it. Is there a host hotel this year?
Numbers on both sides of the sails seem a bit out of touch with a windsurfing regatta and more appropriate for a sailing regatta. Will we need numbers on both or will professionally made numbers on the starboard side get the job done?? I'm sure Steve and I aren't the only ones wondering.

Hey Jason. Part of the reason for high motel bills is its still tourist season in March in all of South FL. When I'm traveling overnights over there, I use the coupon books you see at Rest Areas on the highway. Rent still ain't cheap with those. Give me a ring and we'll exchange traveler's knowledge.

Hi Guys,
We are looking forward another great regatta. We have a really great group at the Sailing Squadron helping us out.
I don't understand the reservations about the sail numbers. This is a Funboard (Formula) racing rule,(9.1 and 9.2) that has been present at all the recent regattas including MidWinter's, our Regatta last year, and the St. Pete Classic. It hasn't always been enforced very vigorously, but this has sometimes caused major problems for the scorers, causing in some cases hours of delays in posting results and inducing errors. It is kind of a pain to put numbers on both sides of the sail, but it is a bigger pain to not get scored correctly, or wait for results while some poor guys who are giving up their weekend for us pull their hair out. No one is going to blast a hole in your sail with a shotgun if you don't have legal numbers, but it sure will help the committee and scorers if you do. These difficulties are part of why I am going to be on the RC boat, and we are going to be **** about getting Names and Sail Numbers right. We had a lot of errors last year just because the folks entering the data in the scoring program couldn't read handwriting. We're just trying to make it a good race.
We will have sticky numbers for sale (as cheaply as we can) for anyone who wants them. I'm sure that is not an issue for either Steve or Jason however.
Best Regards,
Jack (Sarasota)

At the Midwinters last year even the pros had numbers on 1 side. If you put the finish line after a short upwind leg as most races have been, you only need a number on one side unless you sail across the finish clew first.
