Another great day on the Exo-Wave
Sideoff wind warm front wind was very challenging, 5-22 mph at Playalinda FL. Waves were head high and glassy. Exo 105 and AirX 7.0 yet again gets the job done. If one were to use a mtn biking term "technical," that's a great parallel. Not many opp's to work on trippy jumps, just wave riding. Some rides were the best I've had in a very long time. Worth all the frustration getting washed hard quite alot.

Still another fantastic day at Playalinda. This time on a 5.8 Charge and the Exo-Wave 105. Racers got to do their thing. Good for them. The waves were a blast.
Surprize, the NWS forecast office, missed the mark, bad. They were calling for 10-15. It was 19-22. Nice :~] |

Enjoyed the PIX from MiOax. Since we about the same weight, what is your breakdown of when you jump from the Exo 105 to Exo 85? Do you push the Exo 85 with a 5.8 sail? Bri |

Pretty subjective, really Brian. Onshore, sideshore, off, waves, juice, puffs, etc. Throw in shear laziness too. :~] 5.8 juiced I'm happy with either board. 5.0 and down, easy choice, unless it's really big and offshore. No easy answers, lots of overlaps. Mostly good, great, or better outcomes. That's the important part. Hate being vague, but the dilema is they compliment each other very well, but in a very case by case way.

I can go with that! I hear ya, way too many variables. My questions was way open ended. Sometimes I wonder about the sail range listed on boards, but I usually lop off a little on the high and low side. Maybe 5.8 isn't the sweet spot, but could probably push it if needed.

From my perspective, the sail ranges are too small. If I feel spry, I'll put a 6.4 on the ExW 85, no problems with a steady wind state. Too lazy/risky to down size board and sail? Put a 5.0 on the 105...
When I tested the Cross series last fall, I used a 7.8 and a 32 cm fin for all three. They all adapted well to that sail. John I |

Wardog,
Thanks for the detailed info! I always appreciate it (I try not to bug you too much!..but sometime take it out on the forum, so others may learn as well). Anway, I suppose this thread should be on the Exocet forum, but hey...John I started it! :) I've been struggling trying to figure out my 2 board quiver (I don't want my Cross 117 to come into the mix). Thus my looking to replace my 92L board with the Exo 105. The next part has been a little hard for me. Was thinking of Exo 85 or UW 88 for the 2nd board. Reason, being I've been using my 92L board as almost a one board quiver for the past year (great range) and I think that is throwing my perspective off on things. I never seem to switch down as it's comfortable. I took my 77L wave board to the Gorge with me and it worked fine, and I actually took it out here a month or so ago (here at home) and it worked (not ideal, was a little light). But it did work. I hardly use 4.0 sails at home, whatever my 2nd board is, it needs to handle the a 4.5 and then dip into the 4.0 range once or twice a year. The way you and John I are riding the Exo 105, it seems the Exo 85 & UW 88 would work. I do believe in volume when getting out through the shore pound and working the inside! So that is why I've been concentrating on the 80L+ boards. All in all, I think the Exo 105 & 85 makes the most sense, but for some reason the stubby UW 88 is on my mind. Again, thanks to you and John I for all the info! Bri Last edited by Brian M. : 03-08-2006 at 05:58 AM. |

Today was the classic two board one sail scenario. EW105 early then EW85 later. Both with the 5.8 Charge. Under downhauled then max when the wind turned up a notch.
The 105 got a little poundy on the outside. Still great on the wave. Sure clue to switch boards and tug down and out... Winds 15-20 then 20-30 with a couple of lively gusts. Side the side on. Swells 5-8 foot, peeling at times, chunky and sectiony as the tide came up and stayed longer than welcome. :~) Another fine day. |

How does the exo105 compare to the cross102 in transitions and carving? Does it come out of the turns with speed and planning power when sailed agressively.
I have the cross102 and sometimes feel that It might be nice to have a little more carving ability in the board. It seems to want to resist carving in the waves. It's true that I don't use a wave fine with it. I use a JP freestyle which seems to hinder carving. I do mostly bay sailing freestyle with some occasional waves. Does it make more sense to stick to the cross and shop for better fins? I really like the early planing of the Cross. |
